Crofter’s Revenge was born in Regina, Saskatchewan in the spring of 2001. They burst onto the local music scene with a rousing St. Patrick’s Day gig at the Bushwakker brew pub, followed by an even more rousing set at Mosaic’s Scottish pavilion that summer.
The band cooked up an infectious mix of covers, originals and traditionals: Celtic rock, drinking songs, jigs and reels, pirate ballads, sea shanties, Canadiana and occasional forays into blues, reggae, Australian pop and Middle Eastern psychedelia.
Unfortunately the band’s bassist, Brock, was unable to continue with the group because the commute from Moose Jaw was just too damn long. The remaining Crofters — Johnny D, Mystic T & Rick McB — found musical solace in other bands and used the time to hone their considerable song writing skills.
The band regrouped in the fall of 2001 with a new bass player they dubbed L-A Woman. Crofter’s Revenge burst back onto the Regina music scene with a rousing Robbie Burns Day gig (at the Bushwakker, naturally!) in January, 2002. The Crofters then recorded a live, six-song demo CD in order to bring their songs of “pillage, treasure and ale” to a wider audience.
2003 is proving to be a banner year for the Crofters as they've been honoured to add fiddle whiz Shamma Sabir to their line-up. (No nickname for Shamma yet... hmm!) Now rounded out with five-part harmonies and some blistering fiddle tunes, the band is sounding better than ever and hoping to come to a town near you.
